“We are raised in a culture that values the physical sciences, almost to the exclusion of our humanity. We have been taught that we have only five senses: sight, hearing, touch taste, and smell. Each of those senses has a physical body part to which it can be associated. The scientific culture in which we grew up did not believe that there could be a sense without an associated body part or sense organ, so the total of our sense must be five.” Lyn Buchanan

According to Lyn Buchanan, there is a sixth sense that everyone is born with...and this sixth sense is not associated with a body part. This sense is called: ambience.
Ambience is the ability to perceive subtle tones and nuances in a person or place.

For example, when most people walk into a church or a cathedral they will suddenly become very quiet and speak in whispers. Similarly, when most people find themselves at the edge of a tall cliff, they will instantly feel a sense of panic.

A more common experience of ambience is walking into an office building. A person with a keen sense of ambience can instantly determine whether there is a morale problem among the employees. Whenever I interview for a new job, I insist on being taken on a tour of the facility…not so much because I want to “see” the working conditions, rather because I want to get a “feel” for the employees and the morale (or ambience) of the place. I have turned down several jobs in the past…because I did not like the ambience of the office.

According to Mr. Buchanan, “…90% of everything that passes for psychic is nothing more than a person’s innate ability to read the ambience of the person in front of them, the situation, or the extremely subtle tones and nuances of people present.”

In my humble opinion, I think there is a certain amount of truth to the above statement. However, I’d like to think that most of the time that the perceptions are a magical blend of one’s sense of ambience mixed with intuition.

For example, when it comes to a Mother’s Intuition…when she just knows something is wrong with her child, even though the pediatrician disagrees…is that ambience or ambience mixed with something more?

Like intuition, ambience is a skill that can be sharpened with practice. Mr. Buchanan described the following ambience exercise in his book the Seventh Sense: “Starting immediately, notice every doorway you go through. Before you do, stop and see if you can get a feel for the ambience in the room you are leaving. Then step through the door and see if you can feel the change in ambience.”

It is that simple.

You will be amazed at what you start to perceive!
