Serotonin and Tryptophan: Enhancement of the Pineal Gland and Psychic Reception

Serotonin taken orally does not pass into the serotonergic pathways of the central nervous system because it does not cross the blood-brain barrier. However, Tryptophan can and its metabolite 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), from which serotonin is synthesized, will and does cross the blood-brain barrier. These agents are available as dietary supplements and may be effective serotonergic increasing agents to increase psychic receptivity.

In the central nervous system, serotonin is believed to play an important role in the regulation of anger, aggression, body temperature, mood, sleep, vomiting, sexuality, and appetite. Low levels of serotonin have been associated with several disorders, namely increase in aggressive and angry behaviors, clinical depression, Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), migraine, irritable bowel syndrome, tinnitus, fibromyalgia, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders . Recent findings suggest that the serotonin (5-HT) transporter in lowered levels might be linked to both neuroticism and sexual behaviour as well as to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The similarities between an overvalued idea, such as that typical of subjects in the early phase of a love relationship, and obsession, prompted us to explore the possibility that the two conditions might share alterations at the level of the 5-HT transporter. METHODS: Twenty subjects who had recently (within the previous 6 months) fallen in love, 20 unmedicated OCD patients and 20 normal controls, were included in the study. The 5-HT transporter was evaluated with the specific binding of 3H-paroxetine (3H-Par) to platelet membranes. RESULTS: The results showed that the density of 3H-Par binding sites was significantly lower in subjects who had recently fallen in love and in OCD patients than in controls. DISCUSSION: The main finding of the present study is that subjects who were in the early romantic phase of a love relationship were not different from OCD patients in terms of the density of the platelet 5-HT transporter, which proved to be significantly lower than in the normal controls. This would suggest common neurochemical changes involving the 5-HT system, linked to psychological dimensions shared by the two conditions, perhaps at an ideational level. Vitamin B6 is critical in the production of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Sadly, it is likely that millions of people on Prozac are simply suffering from depression caused by Vitamin B6 deficiency. Normal levels of serotonin can result in calmer nerves, improved moods, regulated sleep patterns and a reduced sensation of pain. High humidity and temperatures can reduce negative ions in the air which, in turn, decreases oxygen thru higher humidity, reduces alertness, increases drowsiness, and reduces mental energy that stress in turn increases serotonin levels. This distantly brings to mind the Native American sweat lodge and vision quests, and 2 more elements worth mentioning also involved are lowered lighting, recall serotonin levels are at peak during the dark early AM hours, and nocturnal creatures retain the highest serotonin levels. Then the last key ingredient was entraining chants or bi nueral music.

Antidepressants
The MAOI's prevent the breakdown of monoamine neurotransmitters (including serotonin), and therefore increase concentrations of the neurotransmitter in the brain.( In the pineal gland specifically.) MAOI therapy is associated with many adverse drug reactions, and patients are at risk of hypertensive crisis ( altered states ) triggered by foods with high tyramine content and certain drugs. ( Which increase psychic awareness, clairity and receptivity.)

Herbs, vitamins and foods that raise Serotonin levels to the pineal gland naturally for centering and psychic receptivity listed below.

REPEATING NOTE: ALL the foods listed below should be AVOIDED when already taking MAOI therapy drugs. (anti-depressants) On rare occasions, cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac failure, and intracerebral hemorrhage have developed in patients receiving MAOI therapy that did not observe these dietary restrictions. Due to MAOI's producing this same effect there is no further need of serotonin production for these persons, any more serotonin would effect there health adversely.

St. John's Wort

Magnolia bark

B-50

Magnesium

5-HTP ~ extract of Griffonia simplicifolia seeds is the direct metabolic precursor of serotonin and is important for the production of melatonin. 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a metabolite of the amino acid tryptophan. You may know tryptophan as the agent in turkey that makes you feel like taking a nap after Thanksgiving dinner, 5-HTP is a direct precursor of the important inhibitory neurotransmitter serotonin, which is secreted in response to mood or emotion swings. Serotonin soothes and calms and brings about feelings of centering and contentment.

Foods : Walnuts, hickory nuts, bananas, prunes, plums, figs, grapes, raisins, eggplant, avocados, kiwi, pineapple, oranges, tomatoes, broth, bullion cubes, soy products, fish, white meats, brewers yeast, ginseng and spinach.

Serotonin is found in mushrooms and plants, including fruits and vegetables. The highest values of 25 - 400 mg/kg have been found in nuts of the walnut and hickory. 3 - 30 mg/kg have been found in plantain, pineapple, banana, kiwi, plums, and tomatoes. Moderate levels from 0.1 - 3 mg/kg have been found in a wide range of tested vegetables.
